You should never make a long line in front of you.

I must say a rule that you definitely must follow.

You should never make a long line in front of you.

Mr.Mukoyama said that if you made a line including more than 4 students then you couldn't control it and your class will get into collapse.

You must check the notebooks and give the mark of praising within 1 second each. Sometimes less than 1-second especially at the math class etc. These kinds of skills are necessary for teachers.

You can see the notebook at a specific time when the student wants you to see the notebook.

1. You can see the notebook at a specific time when the student wants you to see the notebook.

If you are going to go move around the classroom, the students have to wait just sitting at the seats until you'll come to.
If you make the students bring the notebooks to you, you can see the notebook at a specific time when the student wants you to see the notebook.
It OK to sitting your teacher's desk and just waiting.
It would be so important.
Because the students who finished works could economize the time that they just keep hanging on until the teacher will come to.

The principle called "KEEP BUSY".
Teachers must always keep students busy in the lessons.

You should keep this principle.
However, I must say a rule that you definitely must follow.

The moving around the classroom is not the only way to check the student's notebooks.

ノートチェック01.001.jpeg
  1. There are two ways that you can check the student's notebooks.

The moving around the classroom is not the only way to check the student's notebooks.
When you would like to check and feedback something to the student's notebooks in-class time, it can be roughly divided into two types of ways as below.

1) The teacher moves around the classroom.

2) Making students bring their notebook to the teacher.

Both ways have pros and cons of course. You can's say generally which one would be better or not. You should understand the better aspects respectively. Then you can apply it to a specific situation if you were a professional teacher.

From now on, I'm gonna clarify the advantages of the way of "Making students bring their notebook to the teacher."

You shouldn't see vaguely. You should memorize the concrete status of the students.

4) You shouldn't go easily to the students who call you.

What kind of things the students write? what meaning the things they wrote have? you should train yourself to grab these things at the glance and memorize them.
Using this kind of information, you can make a student stand up, or make them say something, or make them write on the board, or you can make the strategy of the order of student's speech.
That is all I said the very first steps of moving around the classroom.

You shouldn't go easily to the students who call you.

3) You shouldn't go easily to the students who call you.

When you gave some instructions and began to go around the classroom,
You may have some students who want you to come to them soon like,
"Hey, Mr./Ms.!"
Or when you made students do some PC works in the PC room as well, some students tended to call you.
"Hey, Mr.! Please come to me!"
Some teachers go to the students and listen to him/her and give advice whenever they call you. It's not good. It's a typical bad way to teach.
You have to go here and there all around the room whenever you are called. It's kind of wasting time.
When you have the student who calls you, in the first time you should ask like,
"What's the matter?"
If he/she said things related to the works that you instructed, then you should say like,
"I'll go soon, just wait at your seat."
If you said this several times, students will become not call you gradually.
Because they can understand that you surely come to them within a few minutes. That would be getting into a normal situation.
Aside from the normal situation, occasionally they may call you due to having some trouble something in their health condition for example. So you should never ignore their call. You have to make sure what the matter is all the time.

You should never teach somethings for at great length squatted beside the kids.

2)You should never teach somethings for at great length squatted beside the kids.

I sometimes notice that some teachers squat beside the desk of specific kids and teach them so long time.
The kids are definitely slow learners, and always the same kids.
That is the absolutely worst way to teach, except the very special cases.
To speak of extremes, that way means the kids were said: "you are an idiot" over and over again in the public situation.
To make matters worse, teachers believe that they are doing nice things usually.

The lists of definitely bad ways when moving around the classroom.
You might think the ways you do would be good. But sometimes it would be the worst thing. We have to think carefully about the effectiveness of the things we do in the classroom.
Let me show you common "Bad examples" in the way you do while moving around the classroom.

1) Just walking in the park.

As I said before in the former blogs, I did this thing at my young age. No evidence, just intuitively, and you happen to see a notebook accidentally, and pretend to teach something with no strategy...
It was not the "instructions" but the "strolls".
You won't make any effective learning outcomes. It's just meaningless instructions.

You should look at the student's notebooks again and again.

机間巡視8.001.jpeg
3. Moving around the classroom
... Continued from the previous blog.

4) You should look at the student's notebooks again and again.

If the student had failed the tasks, it would be better to write X or ✓ on their notebooks and leave from the desk immediately. In Japan, "X" means that it's not correct. "✓" means that "I surely looked at it".
Then you go around the classroom. If the student's answer was correct when you came back to the student at a second time, you can write O and should praise. If the student failed again, you write the "X" again and give a slight clue and leave from the desk immediately. And for the third time, you might write the "O".
Therefore, the point that the teacher looks at the student's notebook is always just only one.

You must finish a round of walking between the student's desks within 5 minutes.

3) You must finish a round of walking between the student's desks within 5 minutes.

Probably, It's might be the most important aspect. I mean the speed of walking around would be fast.
The "within 5 min." is the basic criteria. It would be better that you did within 3 min if you could.
If you stayed and talked for a long time at a specific student's desk, you couldn't walk around within 5 min. The longest stay at a student could be less than 30 seconds.

The starting place of teachers should be changed every time.

2) The starting place of teachers should be changed every time.

For example, if you started from the first line at the corridor side for the first time, so you can start from the second line for the second time, and for the third time from the third line and so on...
If you didn't so, the student who was seen first and the student who was seen the end would be fixed all the time.

Fix the route you walk between the student's desks.

You shouldn't walk intuitively the way that you guess it would be better. You should walk the exact same route every time.
For example, The one sample route can be as below. It's OK if you won't walk as same as this.
机間巡視4.001.jpegThe important thing is the route is the one you can look at all the students, in the same way, equally.

"The very first steps" or "ABC" of the way you moved around in the classroom.

A. "The very first steps" or "ABC" of the way you moved around in the classroom.

There are very basic and typical ways of moving around the classroom.
You should learn these basic skills before getting the ability to apply in various situations.
The teachers who know and use smoothly these basic skills would be able to apply flexibly.
Terrible teachers would be doing terrible things over and over again. The students could be victims.

I'll show you "The very first steps" or "ABC" of the way you moved around in the classroom from the next blogs.

The way you moved around in the classroom was terrible.

I could say nothing for his statements.
He kept on indicating things like below.

  1. There were 12 students who weren't checked their notebook by the teacher even once.
  2. You were staying so long time at the specific students.
  3. The viewpoint that you have was not stable. It was just a thought that came to your mind, and it wasn't fit with today's learning goals.

I can remember that all of us including the veteran co-worker teachers who were there was getting be silent.

Yes. There are basic principals for teachers in the way of moving around the classroom.

But I couldn't grab his meaning. I just said nothing.
He continued.

Mr.Tani, you were walking around between the student's desks, weren't you? Could you recall the path that you walked?

I couldn't, of course.

I was arrogant and had too much confidence in my first year.
I embarrassed that I probably said some ignorant things impolitely about my lesson.
The lecturer came from a famous publication company. He planned to talk about some instructional principles of mathematics.
But my class lesson was so bad that he changed his plan.
And said.

Mr.Tani, your lesson skills aren't worth to say something. That's not enough to analyze as a subject teaching.

I was a rookie teacher and was so conceited.
At the meeting after the demonstration class, I explained something arrogantly.
The lecturer was from a publishing company that was specialized in mathematics. So he would have talked about the principles of math teaching in his original plans.
But my class lesson was too bad to talk about it.
So he said,

Mr.Tani, your lesson skills aren't worth to say something. That's not enough to analyze as a subject teaching.

I have to confess my real experience.

He said.

Mr.Tani, your lesson skills aren't worth to say something. That's not enough to analyze as a subject teaching.

It was my rookie year. I was a homeroom teacher in the 3rd grade. I hoped to demonstrate my class voluntarily as a study session. And He came to our school as a lecturer from the famous publication company. I guess he had enough experience and had adequate abilities as a supervisor.

3. Moving around the classroom

ゆるきゃら散歩.jpg
The basic way to walk around the class and check how they are doing

The most usual way to move around the classroom is that you walk between the student's desks and check their notes quickly.
I've been observing a lot of classes, but I hardly see the teacher who can do this "walking between desks" in basic ways.
If I have to choose a word, most of the teachers do really nonsense ways that are so to speak "just stroll between desks".

3. Moving around the classroom

待ちくたびれ.jpg
The basic way to walk around the class and check how they are doing

Nest the tip is the "Moving around the classroom"
"Standing Position" is the way to stop your body, "Moving around the classroom" means the teacher's route of moving around the classroom.
It's also so basic skill but not so common nor easy.

Basic of basic = The teacher's position that can control the student's mind. (2 Stand apart from the speaking student.)

... Continued from the previous blog.

Of course, you should warn students sometimes.

Hey Yukiko, Masaki seems to say "I don't want to hear you". You should talk toward one who doesn't want to hear from you."

Or,

Yukiko, just ask Masaki like,
"What do you think about it, Masaki."

In some cases, you need to take these kinds of handling.
But, as I was writing in past several blogs, in the small situation, You must have an ability to control the student's awarenesses by shifting your basic standing position or something.

Basic of basic = The teacher's position that can control the student's mind. (2 Stand apart from the speaking student.)

優しい先生.jpg
... Continued from the previous blog.

The teacher is standing very next to Masaki. The teacher is listening to Yukiko's speech at the place. So Masaki has no choice but just listening to her.
When she finishes speaking, you just glance at Masaki a little,
"I see. It was a really interesting story, wasn't it? Write something you are thinking about her opinions on your notebook."
You can proceed with your class like this.

Basic of basic = The teacher's position that can control the student's mind. (2 Stand apart from the speaking student.)

... Continued from the previous blog.

For example, you may try to make the student say something,
"I think Yukiko has a nice opinion on her notebook. Yukiko, Please say it to the class."
But in your classroom, Masaki tends not to focus on the speech of peers. So you can shift your standing place nearby Masaki casually before Yukiko speaks.
That is all you have to do.

Basic of basic = The teacher's position that can control the student's mind. (1 Approaching the speaking student.)

Sometimes, you can go nearby the student who is speaking.
You are saying "Hey Taro, you wrote a very nice opinion didn't you? Just stand up and read it aloud", while walking toward the student.
During the students read it, you are standing next to him/her nodding positively. At that time you should make eye contact with the whole class. When the student finishes reading, you come back to the front again saying like "OK everybody, Let's get writing something you think about his/her opinion".
That's it. Just doing like this will make the students focus on the speakers.
You don't have to say to the students "Listen carefully!" etc.

Basic of basic = The teacher's position that can control the student's mind. (1 Approaching the specific student.)

勉強中.jpg
... Continued from the previous blog.

By just doing such things I mentioned in the previous blog, sometimes a student would be able to ease and calm significantly.
I'm not sure the true meaning, but I think they may be able to feel some sense like connecting to the teacher.
Especially if you are making a good relationship with the student, it would work great just by making such a standing position.
On the contrary, if the student doesn't trust you or he/she hates you, it would have the opposite effect.
And of course, it's not natural to stand nearby the exact same student always. You should shift your standing place depending on the context obviously.

If you have a specific student whom you are thinking in your mind.

1. You stand nearby his/her desk as if it didn't matter.
2. You don't see him/her. You don't make eye contact.
3. Depending on the condition, you can place your hand on his/her desk naturally. (not always)
4. You should make eye contact with the whole class.
5. You proceed with your class lesson at the place.
6. In the case of after making some instructions to let them do something, you can tap his/her shoulder casually, or you can say something a little to him/her. (not always)

I'll show you the basics of basic related to "Teacher's intentional standing position".
Sometime, you should stand nearby some specific student. someone who is a little restless, someone who tends to talk too much...
Especially if you have students who need special supports, probably you may let them sit on the forward side of the classroom.
You can be near such a kid consciously, and you can proceed with your lesson at the place.

Teacher’s Position in the classroom. Basic of basic = The chain connecting blackboard and teacher's desk.

鎖.jpg
ラッキーエースさんによる写真ACからの写真

The teacher even who can't move from his desk could write something on the blackboard.
"Who can say something?"
And he points out one student who raises the hand, and writes it on the blackboard.
Just only when he writes something, he is a little bit away from the desk and turns back from students. And he comes back to his desk like being gravitated. It seems like he is connected with the desk by the chain.
Only the children who are good at learning raise their hands and speak, and the other children who are not good at learning are absent-minded. They are placing their heads on the desks.
Instruction plan on the desk, Teaching strategy just on letting students raise their hands, Meaningless writing on the blackboard... All these things should be thrown away.
You should plan your "standing position" more intentionally.
