3. Moving around the classroom

ゆるきゃら散歩.jpg
The basic way to walk around the class and check how they are doing

The most usual way to move around the classroom is that you walk between the student's desks and check their notes quickly.
I've been observing a lot of classes, but I hardly see the teacher who can do this "walking between desks" in basic ways.
If I have to choose a word, most of the teachers do really nonsense ways that are so to speak "just stroll between desks".

3. Moving around the classroom

Nest the tip is the "Moving around the classroom"
"Standing Position" is the way to stop your body, "Moving around the classroom" means the teacher's route of moving around the classroom.
It's also so basic skill but not so common nor easy.

Basic of basic = The teacher's position that can control the student's mind. (2 Stand apart from the speaking student.)

Of course, you should warn students sometimes.

Hey Yukiko, Masaki seems to say "I don't want to hear you". You should talk toward one who doesn't want to hear from you."

Or,

Yukiko, just ask Masaki like,
"What do you think about it, Masaki."

In some cases, you need to take these kinds of handling.
But, as I was writing in past several blogs, in the small situation, You must have an ability to control the student's awarenesses by shifting your basic standing position or something.

The teacher is standing very next to Masaki. The teacher is listening to Yukiko's speech at the place. So Masaki has no choice but just listening to her.
When she finishes speaking, you just glance at Masaki a little,
"I see. It was a really interesting story, wasn't it? Write something you are thinking about her opinions on your notebook."
You can proceed with your class like this.

For example, you may try to make the student say something,
"I think Yukiko has a nice opinion on her notebook. Yukiko, Please say it to the class."
But in your classroom, Masaki tends not to focus on the speech of peers. So you can shift your standing place nearby Masaki casually before Yukiko speaks.
That is all you have to do.

Sometimes, you can go nearby the student who is speaking.
You are saying "Hey Taro, you wrote a very nice opinion didn't you? Just stand up and read it aloud", while walking toward the student.
During the students read it, you are standing next to him/her nodding positively. At that time you should make eye contact with the whole class. When the student finishes reading, you come back to the front again saying like "OK everybody, Let's get writing something you think about his/her opinion".
That's it. Just doing like this will make the students focus on the speakers.
You don't have to say to the students "Listen carefully!" etc.

By just doing such things I mentioned in the previous blog, sometimes a student would be able to ease and calm significantly.
I'm not sure the true meaning, but I think they may be able to feel some sense like connecting to the teacher.
Especially if you are making a good relationship with the student, it would work great just by making such a standing position.
On the contrary, if the student doesn't trust you or he/she hates you, it would have the opposite effect.
And of course, it's not natural to stand nearby the exact same student always. You should shift your standing place depending on the context obviously.

If you have a specific student whom you are thinking in your mind.

1. You stand nearby his/her desk as if it didn't matter.
2. You don't see him/her. You don't make eye contact.
3. Depending on the condition, you can place your hand on his/her desk naturally. (not always)
4. You should make eye contact with the whole class.
5. You proceed with your class lesson at the place.
6. In the case of after making some instructions to let them do something, you can tap his/her shoulder casually, or you can say something a little to him/her. (not always)

I'll show you the basics of basic related to "Teacher's intentional standing position".
Sometime, you should stand nearby some specific student. someone who is a little restless, someone who tends to talk too much...
Especially if you have students who need special supports, probably you may let them sit on the forward side of the classroom.
You can be near such a kid consciously, and you can proceed with your lesson at the place.

Teacher’s Position in the classroom. Basic of basic = The chain connecting blackboard and teacher's desk.

The teacher even who can't move from his desk could write something on the blackboard.
"Who can say something?"
And he points out one student who raises the hand, and writes it on the blackboard.
Just only when he writes something, he is a little bit away from the desk and turns back from students. And he comes back to his desk like being gravitated. It seems like he is connected with the desk by the chain.
Only the children who are good at learning raise their hands and speak, and the other children who are not good at learning are absent-minded. They are placing their heads on the desks.
Instruction plan on the desk, Teaching strategy just on letting students raise their hands, Meaningless writing on the blackboard... All these things should be thrown away.
You should plan your "standing position" more intentionally.

If you leave from the teacher's desk, you can't see the instruction plan on the desk. So you never be able to leave there. If so, your instruction would be the worst level that is definitely amateur.

Needless to say that it's important to prepare your instruction plan in detail. It's also important to write your plans down to the planning papers. It's also important to practice as much as you can and to simulate for avoiding the situation that you stop in the middle of the class lessons.

But when you started your class, you should never look at such the "papers". You should abandon the papers. If you often glanced at the papers, the students will become anxious.

You should do your class by just only something in your brain's memories. That would be helpful to keep your rhythm and tempo of your class. You can do more flexible interaction with kids.

Looking at the instruction plan during your class is as same as actors look at the script on the stages.

Teacher’s Position in the classroom. Basic of basic = Teacher who can't move at all

I said earlier when you have to make an important question you should just stand without moving and face your body toward the students and try to be conscious of making eye contact with each student.
Teacher's moving too much position would be harmful to students.
On the other hand, there are some teachers who can't move at all in the classroom.
They can not go out from just really really narrow space.
It's also a problem.

Or you would have a standing position like this.

The standing position that you go through between the students.

I often stood the path between the students' seats that was the second or third place from the front. Mr.Yoichi Mukoyama and Mr.Yoshihiro Noguchi also often stood at this place.
This means that you can stand really close to kids.
So I call this standing position as...

The position that you can send your energy to kids.

When just only you stand nearby kids, the kids tend to focus on the lesson. This is one of the effective positions.

I wrote that the basic teacher's position in the classroom is the place where you can look around every student clearly in front of the room.
This place would be great of course. But aside from this, my other favorite place was...

the place where shifts your position to the corner a little.
Because you can see all the kids well when you see from an angle than right in front.

When you have to make an important question for students, it's quite natural that you should do like above.
You should definitely avoid that you write something on the board during you make questions and directions. In the situation, you will take your back toward the kids. While you are writing, naughty boys become to make the paper planes fly with glancing at your back. Girls become to pass the letters out to peers.

Quite a lot of teachers just hang around without meaning.
If you have the students who have the developmental disorder in the front seat of your classroom, this round trip of the teacher might be so stressful stimulates for the kid.
It may be possible that the bad stimulate of the teacher themselves make the kid annoyed.
The worse news is the kid can't notice "Why am I annoying?" and the teacher can't understand "Why is this kid annoying?". It's totally tragedy.

If you have a specific objective to move it's OK of course.
I'm really annoyed when teachers just go to the right and the left in front of the classroom over and over again repeatedly just like a White bear in a zoo.

*The stereotypical behavior of the White bear would be caused by stress usually, so It may be impolite to the White bear to compare to us. Sorry.
